Agency Profile

The Winnemucca, Nevada, Police Department (WPD) has 24 sworn officers, serving a population of almost 9,000 residents. The department recognizes the value of community trust and commits to providing high-quality municipal services responsively and equitably. Winnemucca’s community is greatly affected by firearms-related crimes, alcohol-related vehicle deaths, and a lack of technological resources to record crime scene evidence.

Partnering with the Rural Violent Crime Reduction Initiative (RVCRI), the WPD plans to fund a three-dimensional (3D) laser scanner for enhanced violent crime scene and accident reconstruction analysis. The WPD is collaborating with the Nevada State Highway Patrol, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, Pershing County Sheriff’s Office, and Lander County Sheriff’s Office to share the 3D scanner to have a multi-jurisdictional impact. In addition to crime scene reconstruction, Winnemucca intends to use the 3D scanner to map the seven schools within its jurisdiction to enhance response planning in the event of an active shooter incident. The WPD intends to use the technology to enhance investigations and prosecutions of violent crimes and fatal traffic accidents while reducing cost expenditures and staffing hours spent waiting for a neighboring jurisdiction with the equipment to arrive on the scene.
